About Julie

Hey there! My name is Julie and I’m 25. I was born a dwarf (AKA Little Person) and I’m 3 feet tall. I was also born blind. I have light perception and can see shapes sometimes, but I don’t really have enough vision to depend on. I use a cane, read Braille, use JAWS on my computer, and all that fun stuff blind people get to play with.

I have a lot of challenges to deal with, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying my life. There’s a lot more to me than being a blind little person. I have an awesome life that is full of joy, an incredible family, and fabulous friends! I am a professional speaker, and I share my story with people of all ages. I speak at schools, churches, and other organizations. I encourage people to approach their obstacles with a positive attitude, and I try to inspire them to look beyond their problems to see the blessings in their lives. I often sing during my presentations to help convey my message. My mom and I released our first CD in December 2006. She and I love to sing together, and sometimes we even do tag-team speaking! We especially love speaking and singing for church women’s groups. My mom and I have an unusually close relationship. I live with her and she helps me with the things I have trouble doing on my own, such as cooking and laundry. She is the most amazing and incredible person I know, and I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s my best friend and my hero. She just got remarried in February of 2008, so I now have a stepdad named Rob. The three of us make a fun little family! My real dad lives nearby with his wife, and I see them frequently. I also have a brother named Jeremy who lives a few miles away with my sister-in-law Kristin and their two year old daughter Ashlynne. I absolutely LOVE being an aunt, and I treasure every moment I can spend with my sweet family!

In addition to being a speaker and singer, I am also a writer. I’ve been published a few times in books and magazines, and I’m in the process of writing my first book right now. I’m also working on a children’s book series. In my spare time I love reading, listening to audio books, watching TV and movies, crocheting, listening to music, and hanging out with my family. I am a Christian, and Jesus Christ is the one and only reason that I am still standing today. He is the source of my joy, my Counselor, my Provider, my peace, and my everlasting hope. He is the reason that I smile.

Good question! I have offered to teach my mom Braille, but she has never learned it. I’ve always wanted to teach her…just for fun… but she hasn’t really had time to learn it. Sometimes I think it’s more fun that way because Braille can be my own secret language, and I think it’s kind of funny when my mom has to ask me, “What does this say?”
